EVENT HISTORY
Tokyo Tower
Opening Celebration for the 62nd National Haiku Convention: Haiku and 100 Years Since the Beginning of the Showa Era
The iconic Tokyo Tower hosted a members-only symposium organized by the Modern Haiku Association at Club333 on Level 1 of the Tokyo Tower Main Deck. This symposium made use of Tokyo Tower's distinct features, demonstrating the value of a unique venue can bring events.
Club333, the event venue, is a multi-purpose space located on the Main Deck of Tokyo Tower, 150 meters above ground. It features a sound system with the immersive atmosphere of a live music venue, along with a large 260-inch LED screen covering the wall.
Although it is usually a shared open space without clear boundaries, the event area can be partitioned off with curtains, making it suitable for both public and private events.
For this symposium, the layout was customized for each part of the program, with different setups for the talk session in the first half and the awards ceremony in the second half, while remaining open to general visitors throughout the event.
The symposium featured a panel discussion on modern haiku and the 100 years since the beginning of the Showa era, tracing the journey of haiku through the Showa, Heisei and Reiwa Periods up to the present day. Around 40 to 50 members attended, and lively discussions continued throughout.
Toward the end of the program, an awards ceremony was held for a haiku competition themed on Tokyo Tower. As the winning works were displayed on the LED screen, the judges offered their remarks.
In conjunction with the symposium, a panel exhibition was also held for six days, from October 28 to November 2, along the 2nd-floor passage in Tokyo Tower Foot Town. The exhibition featured modern haiku and a timeline of the association's history. Located along a route used by visitors from the observation deck and within a commercial area lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, the large panels were highly visible to the general public, with many people stopping to take a look.
According to the organizers, Tokyo Tower was selected as a symbolic venue befitting the milestone of the 100th year of the Showa era, as it is one of the most iconic structures built during that period. Hosting the event at a place symbolic of the city's history made the symposium memorable for participants. Many attendees said they were surprised and delighted, commenting that they had never imagined they would have the chance to attend an event inside Tokyo Tower.
